Alabama's Sales Tax Holidays

STHicon130h

Alabama now has two statewide sales tax holidays.

Alabama retailers are required to participate in the state's sales tax holidays and cannot charge any waived sales taxes on the items that are legally tax-exempt during the two tax holidays.

Retailers and consumers should familiarize themselves with all of the information below to prepare for the sales tax holidays:

BACK-T0-SCHOOL

Alabama's eighth annual sales tax holiday for school-related items begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday, Aug. 2, 2013, and ends at midnight Sunday Aug. 42013, giving shoppers the opportunity to purchase certain school supplies, computers, books and clothing free of state's four percent sales or use tax. Local governments have until July 2, 2013, to join the state sales tax holiday.

SEVERE WEATHER PREPAREDNESS

Alabama's third severe weather preparedness sales tax holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday, Feb. 212014, and ends at midnight, Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014, allowing Alabama shoppers to stock up tax free on common supplies costing less than $60 that every home and business needs to prepare for a natural disaster or even a general emergency. Generators costing $1,000 or less also can be purchased free of the state's four-percent sales tax during the three-day tax holiday. Local governments have until late January to join the state sales tax holiday.
