Attorney General Letter

Dear Alabama Retailer,

I commend Alabama’s retailers for thriving in our fiercely competitive environment.  Fierce competition, however, is not the only factor affecting retailers’ bottom lines – thieves drain millions of dollars each year from the registers through shoplifting and fraud.  Consumers are also victimized by these crimes because the cost cannot be absorbed entirely by retailers, leading to higher prices.

We are all in this together, and together we are fighting back.  The Alabama Retail Association has worked hard with my Office and with the Alabama Legislature to fight this problem by passing criminal laws and civil remedies to protect you and to give you adequate recourse if you become a victim.

I salute my friend Rick Brown of the Alabama Retail Association and his staff for working so closely with the Consumer Affairs Section of my Office to produce this guide.  I trust it will be a useful tool to you as you defend yourself against crime.  The laws it contains are designed to assist us in the apprehension and prosecution of those who prey upon you and your customers.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mr. Brown or my Office of Consumer Affairs by calling us toll free at (800) 392-5658.

SincerelyTroyKing,
